The CHAMP Heart of a Champion Senior Scholarship award is presented annually to one senior male and one senior female student athlete of outstanding character.  Their legacy of character is identified through the edification of their teammates, coaches, classmates, teachers and community, as well as themselves. They are special athletes in that their behavior and actions separate them from the pack, serving as role models for young and old alike.



Austin Maciel - RMHS, Baseball

Austin Maciel is a 3 year letter winner and Academic All State First Team member on the RMHS Baseball team. He has overcome incredible adversity but has maintained a high level of character and integrity far beyond his years, using his experience to grow as an individual and help others. Austin is a national qualifier in DECA and an active member of the National Honor Society. His community involvement is incredibly long volunteering with Respite Care, Catholic Charities, Youth Baseball Camps, and the homeless community of Northern Colorado to name a few. Coach Scott Bullock says he is “selfless every day and is the ideal teammate and player to coach”. He participates in all of these demanding activities while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. Austin is making his decision where to go in the fall, we know he’ll be successful!

Emma Dern - FCHS, Track & Field

Emma Dern is a two sport athlete playing Track & Field in the spring and Volleyball in the fall. She has contributed greatly to her team’s success in Track & Field helping them secure two state titles and one state runner up title. She has contributed by changing the culture of the Lambkins throwers by bringing intensity and playfulness as well as a strong work ethic. Emma is a leader in the class as well as on the field as she maintains a 3.9 GPA while assisting other students who need extra encouragement . Her resilience shows through as she has fought back through injury and rehabilitation to rejoin her team and help them maintain their high level of success. Emma enjoys community involvement, volunteering for several races in Fort Collins. She is looked up to for motivation and camaraderie by all teammates.

Grace Philop - FRHS, Softball

Grace Philop is a four time letter winner on the Fossil Ridge Varsity Softball team ultimately earning the distinction of Team Captain. She has lead her team to state all four years and received the Second Team All-Conference Award in 2014 and 2015 and First Team All-Conference during her senior year. Perhaps more notably, Grace is known as one of the hardest working young ladies who is always pushing herself to get better whether in the classroom or on the field. She is the athlete that leaves it all on the field every day and her unparalleled character is noticed by her teammates as well as her coaches. Off the field, Grace carries a 3.9 GPA and is the member of several academic and extracurricular activities. Grace will take her talents to Fort Hays State University in the fall to play Division II softball.

Shayla Reeves - PHS, Soccer & Basketball

Shayla Reeves has emerged as a leader in both Soccer and Basketball by lettering in both sports during her impressive time at Poudre High School. She has earned Academic All State awards in both sports and been an integral part of both program’s success including a trip to the State Final 4. Shayla has a commitment to excellence on and off the field, earning a 3.6 GPA along with numerous awards and honors. She is also involved in several community service projects including volunteering for youth sports all over Northern Colorado. Her tremendous character shows through in her supportive treatment of her teammates and opposing team members. Shayla always has an encouraging attitude, pushing everyone to do their very best, she has the spirit of a true competitor. Shayla will attend Adams State University in the fall.
