Steve Hawes

2017 Sonny Lubick Coach of Character Award Winner

We are excited to announce that Steve Hawes is our 2017 winner of the Sonny Lubick Coach of Character award. Steve passed away on July 17, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 46. Steve played basketball at Rocky Mountain High School before going on to play JV basketball at the University of Wyoming. Steve's wife Shawna accepted the award on Steve's behalf at our 2017 Breakfast of Champions in March, and shared with our audience many great stories about Steve, his love of the coaching, and his love for the kids he coached.

Steve had been a fixture in the Fort Collins basketball coaching community for over two decades, and always put character at the fixture of his program. He touched the lives of his players, the coaches he coached with and against and made a positive difference to so many. Steve embodied the traits that define this award and his presence on the basketball courts of Fort Collins will be missed, however his legacy not only lives on in his family, including his two children, but in those he touched as a coach in our community
